The Jacob Javits Convention Center renovated the existing building recently and improvements included the addition of a 292,000sf green roof, the second largest on a single, free-standing building in the US. The project’s greenery contributed to a 26% reduction in energy costs and prevents approximately 6.8 million gallons of stormwater from running-off into the city’s combined sewer system therefore helping to limit the amount of raw sewage that pollutes the rivers given a rain event. Designed by FX Fowle/Epstein, the pre-vegetated green roof system by Xero Flor America acts as a fifth building façade that is seen and appreciated from adjacent high-rises. New York Green Roofs was contracted to provide installation detailing with US Roofing Corp and our ongoing maintenance efforts ensure not only the health of the green roof but also the longevity of the project’s significant city-wide benefits.
